About the Course

Rabbi Prof. Daniel Reiser

This course explores the rich interpretive tradition of Hasidic commentary on the Tanakh. Students will engage with foundational Hasidic texts from masters such as the Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid of Mezeritch, and their disciples, examining how these spiritual leaders uncovered profound psychological, mystical, and ethical dimensions within the biblical narrative. Through close textual analysis, we will investigate key Hasidic concepts including devekut (attachment to God), avodah be-gashmiyut (worship through corporeality), and the elevation of everyday experience. The course illuminates how Hasidic thought continues to offer transformative perspectives on Torah study, religious practice, and personal spiritual development in contemporary Jewish life.

Commencing on October 26, 2025, this Master's level course comprises 12 asynchronous units and 2 Zoom lessons. It can be taken as an accredited course toward the Herzog International Master's degree in Teaching Tanakh & Parshanut, and it also qualifies for 3 credits toward our Tanakh Teaching Certificate Program.
