This online course will offer teachers pedagogical tools for teaching the Five Megillot and engaging their students with the sociological and theological issues that they raise.
About the Course
Course Goals:
- To help teachers to approach the simple meaning of the text by applying literary tools and close reading.
- To offer teachers intertextual skills and help them develop a broader appreciation of the Five Megillot as part of Tanakh.
- To engage with sociological and theological issues that can be used to make the study of Tanach relevant for students in the classroom.
- To offer teachers a deep understanding of how history, context and the modern study of archeology can help enrich our understanding of Tanakh
- To offer pedagogical tools for teaching Tanakh in the Modern Orthodox classroom.
- To offer teachers research tools and skills to help them develop independent abilities to develop Tanakh curriculum for the modern classroom.
About the Instructor
Originally from Australia, Rabbi Dr. Ari Silbermann spent 10 years studying at Yeshivat HaKotel, Beit Morasha, and Yeshivat Siach and has some two decades of experience involved in formal and informal Jewish education. He holds a B.A from Monash University, a Dip. Ed. from Herzog College as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. from Bar-Ilan University in Bible. His research interests include Sefer Tehillim, literary approaches to the Bible, and Second Temple Jewish biblical interpretation. He is currently a post-doctoral fellow at Tel-Aviv University involved in mapping Divine epithets in the Hellenistic ancient Near East.
