Parshanut for Teachers

Developing practical strategies and conceptual approaches for bringing the Mefarshim into the classroom. 
This course will help teachers to develop skills and methodology for teaching parshanut in middle school and high school classrooms

About the Course

This course is designed to accomplish the following:   

  • To help teachers develop understanding of the fundamental exegetical, conceptual, and religious goals and methods of Rashi, Rashbam, Ibn Ezra, Ramban, Radak, Abarbanel, Malbim, and Rav Hirsch through analysis of their commentaries   
  • To help teachers develop an approach to teaching parshanut that situates learning within a compelling, engaging intellectual and religious framework
  • To help teachers develop skills and methodology for teaching parshanut in middle school and high school classrooms  
  • To consider the goals of Tanakh study in the eyes of the mefarshim and how that understanding might inform classroom teaching of parshanut   

 This course will be intensively text-based; conceptual exploration will be rooted in textual analysis.  Each unit will: 

  • Develop understanding of methodology and approaches of the mefarshim through analysis of their writings  
  • Explore pedagogical methods and goals, with an eye toward developing practical strategies and conceptual approaches for classroom teaching 

This course comprises 11 asynchronous units and 1 Zoom lesson on Sunday, December 4, 2024 (8:00pm Israel time)

About the Instructor

Rivka Kahan has worked in Jewish education for over 20 years. She taught Tanakh, Gemara, Halakha, and Jewish Philosophy at Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls before serving as Head of School at Ma'ayanot for 10 years. She has lectured widely at synagogues and adult education programs in the United States on topics related to Torah and to Jewish education. Since making aliyah in 2020, she has taught at several midrashot and has developed Torah resources for AlHaTorah.org. In addition to teaching at Herzog Global, she currently teaches at Midreshet Tehillah and Midreshet Emunah V'Omanut. She holds a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. in Bible from Bernard Revel Graduate School of Yeshiva University, and certification in Talmud and Jewish Law from Drisha Scholars Circle.
