Biblical Narrative

When learning Tanakh, students often struggle with the literal understanding of narratives that they encounter.  Engaging in serious discussion about the parameters of Biblical interpretation and of Orthodox belief can deepen students’ faith and engagement.  In this webinar, we will explore several fundamental approaches to literal and allegorical interpretations of narrative in Chumash, focusing on perspectives of Rishonim.

About the Instructor

Rivka Kahan has worked in Jewish education for over 20 years. She taught Tanakh, Gemara, Halakha, and Jewish Philosophy at Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls before serving as Head of School at Ma'ayanot for 10 years. She has lectured widely at synagogues and adult education programs in the United States on topics related to Torah and to Jewish education. Since making aliyah in 2020, she has taught at several midrashot and has developed Torah resources for AlHaTorah.org. In addition to teaching at Herzog Global, she currently teaches at Midreshet Tehilah and Midreshet Emunah V'Omanut. She holds a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. in Bible from Bernard Revel Graduate School of Yeshiva University, and certification in Talmud and Jewish Law from Drisha Scholars Circle.
